Samuel A. Weller, 81, of Fremont, Ohio passed away on July 12, 2024 at Valley View Health Campus in Fremont, Ohio. Born with twin sister on July 23, 1942 in Toledo, Ohio, he is the son of Jerry & Agatha (Wonderly) Weller (founders of Weller-Wonderly Funeral Home) and lived and was raised in Fremont, Ohio. Graduated from St. Joseph High School and American River College in California.
Sam was an accomplished pianist and organist. He played pipe organ at the following Fremont churches: St. Ann's, St. Joseph's and St. Casimir's plus he was one of two charter organists at Sacred Heart CatholicChurch in Fremont. He also played at numerous Exchange Club Travelogues as well as filling in for Lou Burkett's radio show at WFRO when he was on vacation. Additionally, he played organ at various locations while in the military and travels throughout the world.
In 1960, Sam joined the Navy and spent time in Great Lakes, Illinois, Norfolk and Little Creek Virginia, Charleston, South Carolina, Mayport, Florida and Puerto Rico. Additionally, he spent time on a South American Cruise visiting Venezuela and Columbia onboard a Navy LSD USS Casa Grande, and a Mediterranean cruise aboard the aircraft carrier USS Franklin D. Roosevelt. After four years, he transferred to the Air Force saying that 3.3 of those four years were spent on sea duty, and that was enough water. In the Air Force, he was stationed at various bases in the US, as well as Zweibrücken, Germany, Phù Cát Vietnam, and wound up at Mather Air Force Base in Rancho Cordova, CA (outside Sacramento) where he retired after 25 years of service in 1985. His favorite places that his career took him were the French Riviera and Germany.
Sam received several military decorations, with the most notable: The Air Force Commendation Medal, The Air Force Meritorious Service Medal and The Bronze Star for helping save the life of another while under fire in Vietnam. His duties in the military were in the medical field as Superintendent of Hospital, Nursing, Outpatient and Emergency Services. He was also a Physician Extender, which these days we now know as a Physician Assistant.
After retirement, he continued in numerous volunteering positions teaching computers as well as helping senior citizens learning the challenges of the computer world. He also continued with his music and playing the organ.
Surviving are his brother James P. (Mary) Weller as well as nieces, Carolyn (George) Andrews and Kathy (Mario) Gamboa and nephews, Kevin P. Weller and James P. (Phyllis) Weller Jr., MD.
Preceded in death by his parents, Jerry and Agatha Weller, and his twin sister, Jerri Weller.
Visitation will take place on Wednesday, August 28, 2024 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 550 Smith Rd., Fremont, OH. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at the church. The mass can be viewed live at https://www.nationalwebcasts.com/webcasts/sheart/
Burial will take place at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery along with his twin sister, Jerri.
Memorials can be made in his honor to Sacred Heart Catholic Church or Make-A-Wish Foundation.
