Russell Galen Sorg, 95, of Fremont, OH passed away on Friday, May 19, 2017 at Stein Hospice in Sandusky. He was born on May 4, 1922 in Fremont to Harry and Juanita L. (Wilson) Sorg. He was a 1940 graduate of Fremont Ross High School and a 1942 graduate of Tiffin University.
Russell served in the U.S. Army during WWII from 1943 to 1946 and was awarded the American Campaign Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the WWII Victory Medal.
Russell married Virginia R. Peterson on March 19, 1944 at First Presbyterian Church in Anniston, AL where he was serving in the Infantry. She preceded him in death on October 14, 2013.
Russell was Secretary, Treasurer and President at Fremont Kraut Company from 1961 until he retired in 1983. He had previously worked at Herbrand, Ford Motor Company in Detroit, H.J. Heinz and the Hyman Company.
Russell was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Fremont where he had been Treasurer since 1959. He was the Brainard Masonic Lodge Secretary since 1955. He was a member of the Scottish Rite Valley of Toledo and a Zenobia Shriner. Russell was also a member of the American Legion. He served on the Sandusky County Jury Commission since 1975 and was a Trustee at Tiffin University since 1978.
Russell is survived by his children, son, Jan G. (Karen) Sorg, Fremont, OH; daughters, Carol Jo (Art) Whitmire, Byron, IL, and Stephanie Lynn (David) Stull, Fremont, OH; grandchildren, Lisa (Ted) LeJeune, Mark (Mary) Sorg, Nathan Sorg, Owen (Rachel) Sorg, John (Chani) Whitmire, Sherri (Mark) Janulis, Nicole Whetstone, Phebe Montalto, Jarred and Jenna Stull; nine great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Virginia R. Sorg; son-in-law, Art Whitmire;
sisters, Marian L. Flickinger and Virginia L. Young; brother, Richard Sorg,
Visitation: Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Wonderly Horvath Hanes Funeral Home and Crematory, 425 E. State St, Fremont, OH.
Service: Tuesday, May 23, 2017, 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home with Celebrant Maureen Pump officiating.
Burial: Oakwood Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the American Legion and VFW.
