Maurice”Sonny” Spaulding, 76, passed away at home peacefully on 08 November 2012 surrounded by family and friends. Born on October 30th, 1936 in Fremont, Ohio, Sonny attended Fremont city schools until his enlistment in the U.S. Navy in 1954. In the Navy he served honorably as a Signalman aboard both the Destroyer U.S.S. K.M. Willet (DE-354) and also the Battleship U.S.S. Iowa (BB-61). Throughout his entire life he remained an American patriot, proud of his country and military service, which he considered the lifeblood of democracy.
Although traveling extensively while service in the Navy, he always enjoyed the small town appeal of Fremont and hard working attitude of Midwesterners in general, and on 11 December 1957, in Saint Ann’s Church he married Betty L. Krienke, also of Fremont, who faithfully remained his wife and companion for over 56 years. A skilled machinist and mechanic, he ultimately retired from Dana Corporation in Toledo and more recently was employed as a delivery driver for Advanced Auto during his retirement.
An avid fisherman and sports fan throughout his entire life, he cheered for all Ohio teams, but especially took pleasure in attending Fremont Ross High School football games whenever possible. He also graduated and taught Christianity at the Toledo Bible College, was a member of local American Legion Post 121 and Fraternal Order of Eagles 712 in Fremont.
He is survived by his wife and four children, Sherry young (Fremont), Bud Spaulding (Clinton Township, MI), Kathy Gibbs (Fremont) and Anna Hanover (Fremont, ten grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren. Sister, Madelyne Wammas (Fremont) and Uncle, Jack Wrench (Bellevue).
Memorial services will be held for family and friends at a later date. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him. “Fair Winds and Following Seas” his final voyage over, he now rests in the presence of Christ forever.
