L. Scott Ickes, affectionately known to many as “Big Dog,” passed away following a brief illness on Monday, February 12, 2024 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born on December 13, 1950 in Fremont to Lester and Carol (Nichols) Ickes. Scott was a 1968 graduate of Fremont Ross High School and received his Juris Doctorate from Ohio Northern University in 1975.
Scott married Ellen Rellinger on August 27, 1982 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Fremont. He retired in 2005 after many years of public service with Sandusky County as a jailer, chief probation officer, prosecutor, and jail administrator.
Scott lived his life believing there was nothing more important than being a great husband and father. He had a love for Miniature Schnauzers, especially Griff and Gabbi who were his most recent companions.
He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Ellen Ickes, of Fremont; son Jacob (Karyn) Ickes of Baroda, Michigan and daughter Dr. Jessica (Aaron) Tullis and grandson Augustus Tullis of Maumee, Ohio; siblings Jon (Cynthia) Ickes and Melissa Ickes both of Fremont; Mother-in-law Mary Rellinger of Fremont. Many in-laws, nieces, and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Christie Biehl, and father-in-law Oscar Rellinger.
Family and friends are welcome to attend a graveside service on Friday, February 16 at 2:30 p.m. in St. Joseph Cemetery, Fremont and/or the open house that follows from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at Live Edge Center, 115 S. Front St., Fremont where light refreshments will be available.
In lieu of flowers, Scott’s family requests donations to the Fremont Ross Athletic Boosters, PO Box 102, Fremont OH 43420, for the benefit of Fremont Ross’ Hawk-Bucci Natatorium. Scott and Ellen spent many hours at swim meets watching their children compete and that was one of Scott’s greatest joys in life.
Wonderly Horvath Hanes Funeral Home was entrusted with honoring the family’s wishes. Online condolences may be expressed to the family at www.whhfh.com.
