Kent Eugene Merrill, 84, of Fremont, OH passed away surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, June 28, 2016 at Valley View Healthcare Center. He was born January 23, 1932 in Fremont, the son of Eugene H. and Mary E. (Reineck) Merrill. He was a 1950 graduate of St. Joseph High School.
Kent served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1953 to 1955 and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. He married Margaret “Peg” Ann Mayle on September 6, 1954 at St. Joseph Catholic Church and she survives.
Kent worked in the Maintenance Department at Brush Wellman in Elmore, OH and retired in 1992 after many years of service. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, American Legion, VFW and Moose Club all of Fremont. He was also a member of the St. Joseph Boosters. Kent enjoyed playing cards with his friends and family and going to casinos. He was an avid bowler and Cleveland Indians and Browns fan. He loved to spend time with his grandchildren.
Kent is survived by his wife of 62 years, Margaret “Peg” Ann Merrill; children, Linda (Chris) Carnicom, Chuck (Peggy) Merrill, Sue (Jim) Cherry, all of Fremont, OH, Rich (Laurie) Merrill, Fairfield, OH; siblings, Jim Merrill, Florida, Dan Lee, Houston, TX, Patricia Lehmann Bergmoser, Sandusky, OH and Sandra (Roger) Wise, Fremont, OH; grandchildren, Mike and Kurt Carnicom, Cheryl Lustig, Jessica Rice, Mehgan, Alex, Sean and Kari Merrill and Joshua Cherry and seven great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Mary Jean Brutsche and brothers, Jude and Jack Merrill.
Visitation: Thursday from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at Wonderly Horvath Hanes Funeral Home and Crematory, 425 E. State St, Fremont, OH with a vigil service at 7:00 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial: Friday, July 1, 2016, 10:30 am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 550 Smith Rd, Fremont, with Fr. Chris Kardzis officiating with one hour of visitation at church prior to the service.
Burial: St. Joseph Cemetery with military honors provided by the Fremont V.F.W. and American Legion.
