James R. “Jim” Wood, Jr, age 79 of Bexley, Ohio, formerly of Pickerington, passed away Tuesday, December 3, 2024 at his home. He was born October 20th, 1945 in Columbus to the late James R. and Eleanor (Chambers) Wood. At 17, Jim joined and proudly served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. During his 6 years as a distinguished Gunner’s Mate, he served in many parts of the world. After returning to Columbus, Jim met the love of his life, Diane, and they married in 1973. They built a beautiful life together and celebrated their 50th anniversary last December. Jim worked for Ohio Bell for 31 years and after retiring, also worked for the Pickerington School District.
Jim was known for his love of family, sense of humor, and strong will. He always looked forward to family vacations and shared his love of the outdoors with family, including hiking, camping, fishing, and boating. A longtime motorcyclist, Jim loved motorcycle trips, even riding as far as Arizona. He also had a love for music, especially his favorite, Elvis.
Jim is survived by his wife, Diane Wood; daughter, Robin (Ryan Kaiser) Wood, South Carolina; son, Curtis (Michelle) Wood, Bexley; grandchildren, Eloise, Oliver, Charlotte, Chiara, Victoria, and Maria; sisters, Carol (Tim) Westcamp and Sharon Pfalzgraf; many nieces and nephews, and extended family and friends, including longtime family friend Janice Hughes.
Preceded in death by parents, James and Eleanor Wood, brothers, David and Paul Wood; uncles, Charles Chambers and Bill Strong; and aunt, Nancy Strong.
Jim bravely fought a long battle with both cancer and Parkinson’s disease and the many obstacles both presented him. His family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to all of Jim’s special caregivers. Jim worked tirelessly his entire life and now it is time for him to rest.
Funeral Mass was held on Wednesday, December 11, 2024.
Burial will take place on April 5, 2025 at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Cemetery, with military honors provided by the VFW and American Legion.
