Our beautiful mother, Helen Rose Smith, 93, of Fremont, OH went to see Jesus on Wednesday, February 20, 2013 at the Rutherford House. She will always be known for her warm smile that greeted family, friends and everyone she met. She was born on October 9, 1919 to Rudolph C. and M. Rose (Bookmeyer) Beier. She was a graduate of St. Joseph High School.
Helen married Wilbert Smith on October 12, 1946 at St. Joseph Catholic Church and he preceded her in death on November 3, 2011. Helen began working for Howard Zink Corporation in the Payroll department, and then retired to raise her family. With her love for preparing baked goods for the family, Helen carried that same love to the children at Croghan Elementary School cafeteria, retiring in 1981. As a hobby she created beautiful quilts, everything from lap quilts to baptismal quilts for the church. She also made each grandchild a quilt to cherish. Helen was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church where she was a part of the Daughters of Isabella, Blessed Sacrament Confraternity and the Rosary Altar Society.
Helen is survived by her children, David A. (Judy) Smith, Columbus, OH, Thomas P. (Peg) Smith, Bucyrus, OH, Kathy A. (Michael “Mick”) Gerber-Rogers, Temperance, MI, Karen L. (John) Muirhead, Port Clinton, OH; daughter-in-law, Diane M. Smith, Philadelphia, PA; fourteen grandchildren; three step grandchildren; twenty great grandchildren.
The family would like to give special recognition to Helen’s nephew, Jim Shoemaker, of Fremont, for all of his help and kindness.
