Harold “Bugs” G. Frey, 91, of Fremont, OH passed away at his home on Tuesday, January 23, 2018. He was born on March 21, 1926 in Dover, OH, the son of Henry G. and Cleva (Weller) Frey. He was a graduate of Fremont Ross High School, class of 1944 and was the captain of the basketball team.
Bugs served in the U.S. Navy as Cryptographer and Communication Specialist from October 1944 until August 1946 and was awarded the WWII Victory Medal, American Area Ribbon and the Asiatic Pacific Ribbon. He married Elizabeth “Betty” M. Hulka on November 4, 1949 at Hayes United Methodist Church and she survives.
Bugs was a Co-owner with his father, Henry of the Frey Company in Fremont. They manufactured one of the Kewpie Dolls. He was a Plant Manager for O’Bryan Brothers of Chicago, a manufacturer of women’s night and daywear and retired in 1988. He was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity; a Charter member of the Kiwanis Club in Bedford IA; a member of the VFW, Moose Lodge and Lions Club, all of Clarinda, IA. Bugs loved music (choir), watercolor painting, reading and watching TV, especially DVD movies. He was a snappy dresser, an incredible singer and a great dancer.
Bugs is survived by his loving wife of sixty-eight years, Elizabeth “Betty” M. Frey, Fremont, OH; children, Dr. Lisa Frey, Norman, OK, Chris (DiAnne) Frey, St. Charles, MO, Kevin (Michelle) Frey, Castle Rock, CO; siblings, Neal (Gretchen) Frey, Conneaut, OH, Cleva “Tody” Brown, Monclova, OH and Joan Scott, St. Louis, MO; eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Tex Frey
A Celebration of Life will take place on Saturday, January 27, 2018 at Hayes Memorial United Methodist Church, 1441 Fangboner Rd, Fremont, OH, at 1:00 pm, with Pastor Alan Brown officiating. Military Honors will be conducted by the American Legion and VFW.
