Fred W. Smith, 73, of Fremont, OH passed away at his home surrounded by his loving family on November 5, 2024. He was born on October 29, 1951 in Fremont, OH the son of Donald H. and Stella (Schetter) Smith. Fred was a 1970 graduate of Fremont Ross and Vanguard Vocational. He attended Terra Community College for Electrical Training.
Fred married his high school sweetheart Helen A. Ackerman on December 19, 1970 at St Ann Catholic Church and she survives. He was a machine operator at Kelsey Hayes/TRW for thirty-five years. He then worked at Crown Battery for nine years until he retired. Fred was also a “handyman” for many people in the area.
Fred enjoyed running and ran in five marathons. He was an avid Ohio State, Detroit Lions and Tigers fan. He also enjoyed bowling, camping, music, riding his Harley, taking his dog Missy to the park and walking on the beach. Fred mostly loved spending time with his family and attending his granddaughter’s sporting events.
Fred is survived by his wife of fifty-three years, Helen Smith, Fremont; daughters, Amy Slusher, Findlay and Lisa (Dan) Overmyer, Burgoon; grandchildren, Brook (Alex Knoll) Slusher, Clarissa Slusher, Alexis (Armando) Palos, Mackenzie (Zak Reck) Feathers and Rylie Valdez; siblings, Rick “Alfie” Smith, Jim Smith both of Fremont, Doug (Kathy) Smith, Bascom, Scott Smith, Cindy Smith, Jerry Smith all of Fremont, Rose Chamberlin, Vickery and Tammy (Rex) Smith, Tiffin; brother-in-law, Steve Miles and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews.
Fred is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Kathy Miles, brother-in-law, Gary Chamberlin; nephew, Nate Smith and a great niece.
Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Thursday, November 14, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Jospeh Catholic Church, 709 Croghan St., Fremont, OH. The family will greet friends one hour prior to mass in the Parish Hall at the church. A funeral luncheon will follow Mass in the Parish Hall.
In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to Heartland Hospice or Masses can be said in his honor.
