Eugene “Gene” E. Hoppes, 70, of Fremont, OH passed away on Friday, November 14, 2014 at Promedica Memorial Hospital. He was born on June 19, 1944 in Anderson, IN, the son of Everett and Edith (Lemmon) Hoppes.
Gene served in the U.S. Marine Corps from September 18, 1961 until January 17, 1966. He then served in the U.S. Army from November 1, 1967 until October 30, 1970. Gene was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Rifle Sharpshooters Badge, Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal with Two Overseas Bars and Army Occupation Medal (Berlin).
Gene married Lynne (Sprout) Sabo on October 5, 1977 in Fremont and she survives. He worked in the Maintenance Department at Kelsey Hayes for thirty years until they closed in 2006.
Gene was a member of the VFW, United Steel Workers Union and the National Rifle Association (NRA). He enjoyed puzzles, playing cards, especially euchre, and was a John Wayne fan. Gene was a very proud Marine and cherished his grandchildren.
Gene is survived by his wife of thirty-seven years, Lynne Hoppes; children, Dave (Shelley) Hoppes, Gena (Rich) Hineline, Brandy (John Weichman) Hoppes, all of Fremont, OH; two step children; brother, Everett “Bud” Hoppes, Indianapolis, IN; grandchildren, Tylyn Hoppes, Samantha Hoppes, David Hoppes, Jr., Alyssa (Darrin) Bentz, Meghan (Cody) Laird, Scott Parsley, Reghan Hineline, Austin, Rylee and Chace Weichman; eight step grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; one step great grandchild and three step great grandchildren soon to arrive.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.
Visitation: Wednesday from 2 – 4 pm and 6 – 8 pm at Wonderly Horvath Hanes Funeral Home and Crematory, 425 E. State St, Fremont, OH.
Service: Thursday, November 20, 2014, 10:30 am at the funeral home with Certified Funeral Celebrant, Susann Robitski Zimmerman officiating.
Burial: Greenlawn Memory Gardens, Clyde, OH with Military Honors provided by the American Legion and VFW.
