Ernst L. Hillenbrand

August 6, 1935 — January 6, 2025

Fremont

Ernst L. Hillenbrand, 89, of Fremont, OH, passed away peacefully at his home on January 6, 2025, with his loving wife, Carolyn, by his side. His remarkable life began in 1935 in Mainz, Germany, and was marked by love, light, passion, and compassion. To know Ernst was to love him, and his profound kindness and generosity left an indelible impact on all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Born during a turbulent period in history, Ernst overcame significant challenges and emerged with an unshakable determination to rebuild his life. At the age of 24, he immigrated to the United States, becoming a proud citizen and embracing the opportunities of a new life with resilience and optimism. Ernst’s motto, “If somebody else can do it, so can I,” guided him as he mastered languages, piloting, mechanics, architecture, and, perhaps most importantly, the art of teaching. These skills became the foundation of a legacy that will inspire future generations

Ernst founded the Fremont Ballet School, which he built with his own hands. Under his leadership, the school grew into one of the oldest and most respected ballet institutions in Ohio, a beacon of inspiration and opportunity for students from all walks of life. Ernst gave so much to the youth of Fremont and paved the path for many young dancers who went on to have happy and successful lives. His artistry extended beyond the classroom, as he graced the stage as Herr Drosselmeyer in productions of The Nutcracker, bringing joy and artistry to the theater. His presence demonstrated his true love for the arts, the community, and the generations he mentored. Ernst’s students, past and present, carry forward his lessons: that life is precious, to always do what you love, and to cherish time with those who matter most.

Of all his tremendous accomplishments in his very full life, Ernst would be the first to say that the greatest of all was the magical love he shared with Carolyn. The sweetness with which they danced through their beautiful life together was palpable by all who are privileged to have spent time with them.

Together, they embodied the essence of love and partnership, sharing a life full of joy, adventure, and steadfast friendship. Whether enjoying pastries in Paris, soaking up the sun in Puerto Vallarta, or sharing quiet moments with tea in their backyard, Ernst and Carolyn brought out the best in one another. Their relationship was a testament to what love looks like when built on mutual respect and devotion.

Ernst also became a tenured dance professor at Heidelberg University. A passionate conversationalist and lover of life’s simple pleasures, he delighted in friendship over coffee, a sweet treat, or a home-cooked meal. Known for his boundless energy and ingenuity, he was often found tinkering in his garage, completing projects for friends, or working on his cherished Packard automobiles. Though renowned for his restored Packards, he was equally at home in his Ford utility van, returning to “The House That Love Built,” a reflection of his life’s work and values.

Ernst is survived by his devoted wife Carolyn. His children: Todd (Eunme) Friend of Purchase, NY; Jason (Alissa) Friend of New Mexico; Eric (Condessa) Hillenbrand of Toledo; Lisa Maji of Oak Harbor; Margot (Don) Hillenbrand and Karl Hillenbrand, both of Toledo. He was a grandfather to eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Visitation will take place on Saturday, January 11, 2025, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Wonderly Horvath Hanes Funeral Home and Crematory, 425 E. State St., Fremont, OH. The funeral service will begin at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. A Celebration of Life ceremony will follow at The Neely Center at Terra Community College, 2830 Napoleon Rd., Fremont, OH.

Ernst will be remembered as a renaissance man, a visionary teacher, and a loving soul who dedicated his life to uplifting others. His legacy of love, creativity, and resilience will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate to know him. His spirit will forever grace the stage of every performance, inspiring dancers of all ages with his smile and unyielding passion for the arts.
