Erma Smith, age 92, a resident of Green Springs, OH passed away on June 21, 2018, of natural causes. She was born Erma Weiker in Riley Township, OH on December 21, 1925, as the daughter of Mary Lovina Frey and Edward Weiker. She graduated from Fremont Ross High School and worked at Tony’s Bakery, National Carbon, and eventually owned and operated her own beauty shop in Sycamore, OH.
Erma was pre-deceased by her husband, James W. Smith (Superintendent of Mohawk High School), and her daughter, Connie A. Hurlburt, and she is survived by her one son – Kent Smith of Green Springs, OH. Erma is also survived by a granddaughter, Krista Hurlburt, of Washington, DC; a brother Carlos G. Weiker, of Green Springs; a son-in-law Victor Hurlburt, of Lake Mary, FL; and many nieces and nephews.
Erma was married on December 26, 1948 to James W. Smith, then a school teacher, in Fremont, OH. Following James’ career, the Smith family lived in various locations throughout Ohio, to include Green Springs, Graytown, Elmore, Elyria, and Gibsonburg. After Erma’s husbands’ retirement from the education field in 1971, Erma and James built a house and moved to Green Springs, OH. Erma attended Grace Lutheran Church in Fremont, was a member of the Fremont Moose Lodge, PT Boat, Inc., was an active member of the local Red Hat Club called the Purple Vivacious Damsels, was a former member of the Fremont RFD Garden Club, and played pinochle at a local card club.
Visitation will take place on Saturday, June 30, 2018 from 10 to 11 a.m. at Horvath Hanes Funeral Home and Crematory, 211 N. Broadway St, Green Springs, OH. Service will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Jody Rice officiating.
