Douglas E. Berger, 64 of Fremont, OH passed away unexpectedly at his home on Monday, January 22, 2024. He was born on April 14, 1959 in Fremont, OH to Richard and Barbara (Oakleaf) Berger. Doug was a 1977 graduate of Fremont Ross High School and then went on to receive his bachelor's degree in Fire Science.
Doug married Christine M. Kosman on August 25, 1984 in Fremont. He retired in 2012 after thirty-one years of service with the Fremont Fire Department. Doug was currently at Automatic Fire Protection as a Fire Extinguisher Technician with thirty-seven years of service. He was a member of the International Association of Professional Fire Fighters, the Ohio Association of Professional Fire Fighters the motorcycle club, Warthogs, and President of the Board of CASA of Sandusky County. Doug enjoyed riding his Harley, traveling to Cancun, cooking, sprint car racing and being an active part of Jay Kiser Racing Team but above all he loved spending time with his family.
Doug is survived by his wife of thirty-nine years, Christine Berger; daughter, Sandy Berger, both of Fremont, OH; parents, Richard and Barbara Berger, Fremont OH; brothers, Roger Berger, Fremont, OH, Ron (Kathy) Berger, Gibsonburg, OH, Dan (Chris) Berger, Fremont, OH; special family, Alfonso and Olga, Juan Pablo, Alfonso Jr; God children, Fransico, Angela Polter; four nephews, two nieces, many great nieces, great nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins; his dog, Chloe and cat, DC (Doug’s Cat).
He is preceded in death by his father and mother-in-law, Harry and Melba Kosman.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 31, 2024 from 4 to 8 pm at Wonderly Horvath Hanes Funeral Home and Crematory, 425 E. State St, Fremont, OH 43420.
Memorials can be made in Doug’s honor to the National Great Pyrenees Rescue or to CASA of Sandusky County.
