Betty “Sandy” Houghtaling, 87, of Fremont, OH went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, July 16, 2023 in Fremont. Sandy was born December 4, 1935 to John and Evelyn (Swedersky) Ireland in Fremont, OH. Sandy married Richard “Dick” Houghtaling on January 26, 1952 in Angola, IN and he preceded her in death on June 29, 2018. She was a 1953 graduate of Fremont Ross High School.
Sandy will be remembered for always “going and doing the extra” in everything she did starting as a homemaker. She was known for cooking and baking, as many wanted her to start her own bakery. She was also known for her wonderful customer service at Otto and Urban and the Gift Horse where she provided many great memories and stories.
Sandy was involved in Grace Lutheran Church for many years where she sang in the choir, served on church council and enjoyed teaching Bible studies to all ages. She and Dick were very loving people and always helped those in need.
Sandy will be remembered for her Sunday family gatherings where all were welcome to compete in their strong competitive backyard games. She also enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles and embroidered many gifts for her friends and family. Sandy will be remembered most of all for her love of Jesus and her family which she has passed down for many generations.
Sandy is survived by her children, Deborah S. Gallagher, Fremont, OH, Diane F. Houghtaling, San Diego, CA, Dixie D. (David) Haley, Lambertville, MI, David R. (Cindi) Houghtaling, Findlay, OH, Denise S. (John) Leach, San Diego, CA; twelve grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents and husband, Richard “Dick” Houghtaling; sisters, Jacqueline A. (Kenneth) Winkle, Marcia R. (Duane) Reed and son-in-law, Doug Gallagher.
Visitation will take place on Saturday, July 22, 2023 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. with a celebration of life to follow at 10:30 a.m. at Grace Community Church, 900 Smith Rd., Fremont, OH.
Burial will take place at Dana Cemetery.
